7 Steps To Maximize Your Potential

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

A person who is spiritually, emotionally, volitionally and intellectually developed is powerful and is on his or her way to becoming an unstoppable and memorable leader. Each of us is born with the potential to lead. Some people are natural-born leaders while others work to develop their leadership potential.

Emotional maturity is spiritual more than it is intellectual. It's an advanced level of self-awareness which is probably the most important attribute of a great leader. Leaders and entrepreneurs need strong values to stay the course without compromising their integrity and being corrupted by external forces.

Here are seven steps to help you maximize your leadership potential:

  1. Exercise Self-Discipline

Be disciplined in every facet of your life because each area affects the other. If you are undisciplined in your finances it will affect your future and family life. If you are undisciplined with time it affects your work and social activities. Each area of your life is dependent on the other, so the way to live a fulfilled life is to incorporate discipline.

2. Pay The Price For Success

Some people may buy their way to the top but I guarantee they won't be there for long. Anything good in life requires a level of sacrifice. In the business world, you may see many years of drought before the level of success you desire comes. Those who burn the midnight oil while others are playing are sometimes vilified for their choices. In the end, they come out smiling ahead of their peers. You must be willing to give up some things and people to attain your goals.

3. Delay Gratification For Future Results

We live in a microwave society where everyone wants things done now. We are no longer content to wait and this causes many people to give up on their dreams. When things seem slow in coming, many mistakenly interpret the situation as failure. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither will you reap the harvest a day after you plant the seeds. There is the in-between time where tremendous growth must happen before you see the fruits of your labour. Be willing to wait.

The day you plant the seed is not the day you reap the harvest.

4. Establish the Right Connections

Effective leadership requires great relationships. You've heard the saying, no man is an island. We weren't meant to go it alone. You go farther faster with the right team than on your own. Get those connections working on your behalf and vice-versa.

5. Be teachable

Always be open to other's perspectives and seek advice before making major decisions. Wise people are very cognizant of the fact that they don't know everything and are willing to seek advice. There is wisdom in the counsel of many. Don't be too set in your ways. Be open to new knowledge and advice. Go after wisdom.

6. Maintain A Spirit of Humility

Humility = wisdom = maturity

This doesn't mean you think less of yourself, but think of others more and honour those who have contributed to your success.

7. Operate From Character Not Emotions

Gratitude is an admirable character trait. W\hen you can maintain an attitude of gratitude you are able to maintain mastery of any situation you face. That way you can base your decisions on the key character traits of values, beliefs and principles, and not on emotions. When you have mastered this, you become a force to be reckoned with.

How many of these are you putting into practice today? Why not leverage these steps as you transition into the next phase of your journey? It's time to step into your next!
