Kick Mediocrity To The Curb

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

Research shows that only eight percent of the population actually achieve their goals. Eight percent! I had to stop and ask myself, "Why is that?" I reflected on my own struggles in the early days of entrepreneurship, then observed others that I know. Some of those businesses are thriving while others have floundered and disappeared. The thrivers adopted and applied a certain attitude which helped them to overcome obstacles and set them apart from the others, some of which I will elaborate on in this post.

  1. Mindset

The way you view the world will determine how you interact with it. Do you tend to focus on what you see only? Or, do you look beyond the perceived failures, obstacles and setbacks to find a solution? Focusing on these things can create negativity and become a major hindrance to your success.

Life is unpredictable and entrepreneurs must learn to embrace the risks involved and persevere through every challenge. This requires mental strength which you must develop intentionally. What that means is that you should be incorporating regular meditations and prayers into your daily routine. This helps you quiet the mind so that you can think clearly and envision your way forward.

Your mind is designed for critical thinking. You cannot solve problems with the same mindset that created them. Therefore, you need the ability to think higher thoughts. Your mind is a machine that never stops working. Once you activate it, it's a gift that keeps on giving. The quality of the content is solely dependent on what you're feeding yourself. Think differently, change your results and thrive.

2. Aversion to Mediocrity

In my opinion, mediocrity is doing what everyone else is doing and therefore settling for average. The people that are considered great are that way because they pushed out of the quagmire of mediocrity.

Water doesn't boil at 211 degrees, it boils at 212 degrees. One extra degree changes it's state to be used in different ways. Most Olympic champions win by a second or two. That extra push makes all the difference to take them from competitor to the winners' circle.

Achieving greatness is not that difficult. It just requires a little bit more effort than the average person but too many people are comfortable with group think, i.e. mimicking what everyone else is doing instead of being intentional and active creators of your own destiny.

If all it takes a little extra effort, why not push yourself that one degree further? Success requires change.

3. Gaining Mastery Over Fear

Fear is a prisoner and a killer...if you give it that power in your life. For years I was trapped by fear and I will always remember the day when I broke free for good. I am a living example that fear does not have to control your life forever.

When I examined fear I realized that it's based in LACK.

  • Lack of love

  • Lack of resources

  • Lack of protection

  • Lack of confidence

  • Lack of knowledge

  • Lack of the right skills and competencies

  • Lack of certainty (fear of the unknown)

And the list goes on. But once you've identified and dealt with your lack-root, your life will change for good. Many times when I decided to move forward I was feeling immense fear, but I was determined to see a new and different outcome in my circumstances. The only way to overcome fear is to confront it, with your knees and hands shaking if you must. But by any means necessary...get rid of it.

The greatest regret for many people in their latter years are the opportunities they left on the table, unpursued passions, and unfulfilled dreams. (Anon)

Learning to see the possibilities in every fear-based situation you face is key to taking courageous action. Move forward with boldness! You were created to thrive, not just survive.
